I worked for a division of Kiewit called Mass Electric in summer 2019 in Seattle, WA. This group was in the early stages of building massive additions to Seattle's light rail transit system.
This internship called on my engineering background and intuition for physical problem-solving in a role more oriented towards project management and implementation of existing designs. My responsibilities centered largely around the submittal process, in which engineering drawings must be analyzed to create plans for fabrication detailing materials, equipment, personnel, safety procedures, and construction methods in order to guarantee safety and quality, get approval from the client, and proceed with the work. This required a thorough understanding of engineering drawings, attention to detail, and clear communication with material vendors, subcontractors, and the client.
My most impactful project required me to become an expert in a section of underground conduit and cable installation specifications for upcoming work and be the primary author on a > 100-page document detailing 67,000 feet of cable install submitted to the client to verify that the construction would proceed according to their strict specifications.
In another project, I used Microsoft Excel in order to organize tens of thousands of records on communication between the team at Kiewit and their client to find patterns causing delays and preventing progress.
